“I can’t believe you own a HoverHummer.”
Sacaren had already programmed in the directions that Eden had given to him. He had never driven a primitive vehicle like this one before, but it had an auto pilot so he had put that on.
Eden had spent all day working everything out. She’d told him that he should pick Francesca up and drive her. She’d even taken him shopping for these new clothes. They felt a bit stiff and constricting. Still, all human clothing felt that way to him. He did not understand why they insisted on covering so much of their bodies.
“Unless you just hired it for the night? I hope you didn’t do that just to impress me. I mean, it’s impressive don’t get me wrong. I’ve never ridden in one of these before. It’s amazing. But just the cost of powering it up must have been astronomical. I’d have been fine with driving my car and meeting you someplace. I mean, I don’t want to sound ungrateful, but I just hope you didn’t spend all this money for me.”
“You did not wish me to spend money on our date?” he asked, confused.
“Oh no, it’s not that.” She bit her lip. “Crap, I’m saying everything all wrong. I’ve never even had a guy pick me up for a date and here you are doing it in style and I sound so ungrateful, don’t I? It was really nice of you to pick me up.”
He frowned. “Is that not customary? Why did these other males not escort you on your date?”
She looked away for a moment, running her hand over the dashboard. “I haven’t been on a lot of dates and I guess it just made sense to meet them wherever we were going. Which was usually the sports bar a few blocks away. Obviously, that’s not where we’re going tonight.”
“Does that disappoint you?”
“No.” She shook her head. “Not at all, actually it’s a relief. I’d probably know everyone in there. It’s easier not to have everything staring and talking about us. I’m almost guaranteed to spill something down my front if I know there are people watching me. Don’t suppose we’re going to a place that supplies you with bibs?”
“I do not know. Do you wish me to ask when we get there?”
Her eyes widened. “What? No, that was kind of a joke.”
“It was? But you said you—”
“Yes, I know. I seem to have this problem at the moment where I can’t seem to shut up. It’s because I, well, I guess I’m nervous.”
“I am making you nervous.”
“Probably shouldn’t have admitted that, should I?”
“Why?”
“Because it makes me vulnerable,” she whispered.
“And that is a bad thing?”
Her eyes were wide as she stared at him. “It means you can get hurt.”
He nodded. “Yes. I understand.” The vehicle slowed and pulled into a parking lot and backed itself into a space. “But I would never hurt you, so in this instance you have no reason to feel nervous or vulnerable.”
“Not physically. But that’s not the hurt I fear.
